from: Karlie Bestler

A single mother without a job or with a low paying job has a lot of financial problems. How is she going to feed her kids and give them a place to stay? How does she afford clothes and other things they need. If she were alone, she could temporarily stay with a relative or friend, but there are few who are willing to also take her kids. The best help for unemployed single mothers is for her to do is find a job if she doesn't have one or a better job, but that is easier said than done.

Fortunately there is assistance available single mothers can take advantage of. There are some government assistance programs for single mothers to apply for that will help her provide the basic living necessities for herself and her children.

Food Assistance

The federal government operates the SNAP food stamp program. Unlike the old food stamp programs which used coupons, the new program uses an electronic card. This electronic card looks like a typical credit or debit card and is more discreet. Unless she goes around telling people about it, no one will know that she is accepting government assistance to pay for food.

Many state governments also operate some form of food assistance programs. Some cities may also have a food assistance program. Depending on where you live, food banks are operated by charities. For single mothers assistance buying food is one important form of single mother help.

Utilities

Single mother help paying utility bills is another form of public assistance single mothers can take advantage of. The federal government has a program to help with this called Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). As its name suggests, it is for the power bill, especially in winter.

A related program for utility assistance available for single mothers is the Weatherization Assistance grant program. With this assistance available single mothers whose heating bills in winter or cooling bills in summer always seem too high may want to apply for this grant so that she can insulate her home. Better insulation means savings in her power bills.

Housing Assistance

While there is no free money for a single mom who is losing her home, it is often possible to get housing assistance for single mothers with rental assistance for single mothers with low income from the government. The federal government operates the Section 8 housing choice voucher program for just this purpose.

Some state governments also operate their own version of this program. Some single mothers say these state housing programs are much faster and more efficient in the help for single low income mother they provide.

A single mom who needs help to save her own house has few options if she does not have a job. If she has some income, however, she can try the CoAbode Single Mothers House Sharing program. The CoAbode Single Mothers House Sharing program is a charity program which helps single mothers get in touch with each other to share their houses. Basically, some single mothers will be looking for a cheap place to stay while other single mothers will be looking for a single mom who can help pay some of her rent or mortgage. This form of housing assistance for single mothers helps two families at the same time.

College Assistance

Many single mothers are poorly educated and thus they cannot get a good job in the modern economy. For these women, the best hope to get out of poverty is through education. While going back to high school as an adult (or getting the GED) is cheap, going to college is expensive.

Fortunately, there is are free Pell Grants that provide tution assistance for single mothers. The Pell Grant is basically a federal government grant for education applied through the FAFSA website.

Besides the government, there are also charitable organizations that provide tution assistance for single mothers.
