Government Grants to Help Single Moms
from: Karlie BestlerBeing a single mom these days can be very difficult. Statistics show that single moms are one of the most economically disadvantaged groups in the United States.
Many single moms have become single female parents because of a divorce. Many of these single moms used to be homemakers, meaning they were jobless and have no experience in the job market. This is a huge problem because they were dependent on their husbands for income, and once that income goes away, they are left with nothing. These are some sad statistics:
*Single moms are awarded spousal support in only 15% of divorce cases.
*Single moms don't get the spousal support anyway when they are actually awarded spousal support. Statistics show that only 36% of the 15% of total women awarded spousal support actually get this support.
*Single moms rarely get the whole amount of spousal support. The amount they get is usually less than half the amount awarded.
*Single moms suffer a decline in their standard of living after a divorce while the male's standard of living increases by 15%.
One way for single moms to recover from such a blow is to go back to school and learn some skills that will enable the single parent to obtain better paying jobs. Some single moms are fortunate enough to have already completed some higher education and only need the money to finish it. Other single moms will have to start from scratch. Fortunately, the government offers various grants that single moms can use to finish their education.
What is a government grant?
A government grant is usually a form of financial support that the federal government offers to eligible people. Grant money has to be used for the specific purpose of the grant, and the grant money does not have to be paid back. Government educational grants for single mothers and other low income students offer many a chance to further their education.
The federal government offers over 900 grants, and out of these 900 there are a few grants targeted towards single mothers. The Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) has a complete list of all the government grants for single mothers that may be applied for and can be found at their website at www.cfda.gov.
If you are a single mom who wants to pursue higher education, it is best to go to the financial aid office of the college or university you wish to attend. The financial aid office can help students who are applying for federal college grants single mothers.
Who is eligible for a government grant?
Usually grants awarded by the US government are only for US citizens. Aside from this criteria, each grant has its own set of eligibility rules. Some grants are only for undergraduate study. Some grants are only for juniors or sophomores. Some grants target only the origin of the applicant while others target the subject area. For example, there are a lot of grants that offer scholarships for outstanding students who are studying the sciences or tribal politics of Native Americans.
Why apply for a government grant?
As a single mom, furthering your education is one of the surest ways to be able to earn a living where you can earn more than minimum wage. Grant money does not have to be paid back if it is used for the purpose specified.
How to apply for a government grant:
1. Get the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance from the financial aid office of your college or university or get the list from www.cfda.gov.
2. Search for the grants that you are eligible for.
3. Study the application process and the purpose of each grant as well as the government department offering the grant. Where do you have to apply? Does your application have to go through the school? Does your application have to go through the local government or can you send it directly?
4. Grant projects usually have assessment pages where they show previously or currently funded individuals or institutions. You can study these to find out your chances of getting the grant.
5. Know what types of paperwork are required. Make a list of everything you already have and everything that you still have to get.
6. Call the contact persons and ask to get an application kit.
7. After filling out the application kit, don’t forget to include your grant proposal. Most of the judgment for the grant is based on this piece of writing. It could help a lot if you attend or at least have read previous grant proposals.
8. Have your application in before the deadline.
