Looking For A College Grant For Single Mothers

from: Karlie Bestler

So are many other single mothers who wish to further their college education. The sources for grants, which are funds that do not have to be paid back, are not as prevalent as in years past. However, where government has cut back, other private agencies may be able to help you.

Finding college grants for single mothers may take a bit of luck and a whole lot of persistence. One of the first things to do if you are looking for a collage grant for single mothers is to fill out the FAFSA as soon as your taxes are done.

The FAFSA is the Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA application should be done as soon as possible as many grants are on a first-come/first serve basis. By submitting the FAFSA to the colleges or universities of your choice, you will find out if you are eligible for Pell Grants, a government grant program. In addition, you will be reviewed for eligibility for the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) if you submit the FAFSA in a timely manner.

Some grants are based on merit and targeted skills. For instance, the Academic Competitiveness Grant and the National SMART grant are awarded to students who have shown a high academic potential in high school and also who might want to go into a science or math career. Some of these grants have GPA requirements that need to be maintained during college.

Colleges that serve minorities or women only are also great places to search for a college grant for single mothers that may not be government based. These grants may come from private grant funds and thus only eligible to students who apply at these institutions.

Some states have organizations that track state level grants. In North Carolina, for example, the College Foundation of North Carolina offers information on private and state level grants. Every state is different and resources at state agencies might be able to help the search for collage grants for single mothers.

Some programs look like scholarships but could also be viewed as grants. They provide a loan that can be forgiven if you agree to work full-time with the state for a period of time in the field funded in designated shortage areas to repay the loan. These types of loans are usually within the medical service fields, and they do offer funding for graduate studies as well.

Looking for school grants for single mothers takes some persistence and dedication and some detective work as well. Don't stop at filing the FAFSA and figure you have your bases covered. There are a myriad of private grants for single mothers and university funded grants that won't be obvious to you unless you find out you meet the requirements.
