Louisiana Grants For Single Mothers

from: Karlie Bestler

There are several Louisiana grants for single mothers to apply for to help pay for higher education. Grants are financial aid awards for prospective college students. Grant award amounts and criteria for each Louisiana grants program vary. Grants usually do not have to be repaid.

Some grants have stipulations requiring the recipient to maintain a certain grade point average or complete certain employment requirements where the penalty for failing to meet these obligations can be repaying the money received. One of the most popular Louisiana grants for single mothers to apply for is the Louisiana Go Grant.

The Louisiana Go Grant

The purpose of the Louisiana Go Grant Program is to provide a need based component to Louisiana's financial aid plan to support nontraditional and low to moderate income students who need additional aid to attend college. These are Louisiana grants for single mothers to apply for which they will most likely be eligible for.

To be eligible for a Louisiana Go Grant, a student must:

*Be a Louisiana Resident

*File a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

*Receive a federal Pell grant or a financial need grant

*Have remaining financial need greater than "0" after deducting the student's Expected Family Contribution and Federal Pell Grant Award from their Cost of Attendance. Due to limited funding, Louisiana Go Grant awards are not guaranteed to all eligible students, but these Louisiana grants for single mothers and other low income students usually go to the most needy who apply.

*Be enrolled in an eligible Louisiana institution on a part-time, half-time or full-time basis.

Award amounts to eligible students are based on the total Go Grant appropriation and could vary with each academic year. Award amounts also depend on whether the student is full time, half time, or less than half time. Students should check with the financial aid office at the school they plan to attend for their policy on award distribution.

To renew a Louisiana Go Grant students must file a FAFSA or the Renewal Application at least annually, continue receiving a Pell or a financial need grant, have remaining financial need greater than "0," maintain steady academic progress as defined by the institution in which the student is enrolled in accordance with the federal Higher Education Act of 1965. There is a maximum lifetime award of $10,000 per student.

Leveraging Education Assistance Partnership (LEAP)

Another Louisiana grants for single mothers to apply for to help pay for higher education is the LEAP program. LEAP grants are for Louisiana residents who are full time students attending Louisiana post secondary schools. Awards can range from $200 to $2,000. Students mus submit a FAFSA to apply. To be eligible for LEAP grants a student must:

*Be a U.S. citizen or national or eligible non-citizen

*Register with Selective Service if required

*Be a resident of Louisiana for at least one year prior to July 1 of the award year

*Have a high school diploma with at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average or a minimum average score of 45 on the GED Test or an ACT composite score of at least 20 or a postsecondary school GPA of at least 2.0 from the most recent term

*Be certified as a full-time undergraduate student in an eligible program at an eligible institution

Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance

Louisiana does offer some student financial assistance awards that turn into loans for students do not meet their obligations. These student financial assistance awards are a type of teacher student loan forgiveness program. These student financial assistance awards have been given at the rate of 90 per year to students who promise to teach in Louisiana. Some of the features of these student financial assistance awards are:

*Students can receive $6,000 per year for mathematics and chemistry majors; $4,000 per year for other education majors.

*Students can receive funding for a maximum of 4 years.

*Students can combine these funds with other awards and federal aid.

*Loans are forgiven in the ratio of 1 year of forgiveness for each year of teaching or 2 years of forgiveness for each year of teaching in a school located in an economically disadvantaged region.

*The award will turn into a loan if the teaching obligation is not met within 6 years after graduation.

*The interest rate is 8%.

*The yearly payments will total the amount necessary to pay the loan off in10 years or $1,200 per year - whichever is less.

The Tuition Payment Program for Medical School Students

These awards are given to 15 graduate students each year who commit to practicing as primary care physicians for at least 5 consecutive years in a rural or medically disadvantaged area in Louisiana.

The awards are equal to tuition plus room and board for two years at medical school. If the student does not fulfill the employment obligation, the student must pay back double the amount dispersed. The interest rate will be at whatever the state wants to charge as long as it is under the legal maximum. The amount per year will be whatever it takes to pay off the loan in 5 years or $ 5,000 - whichever is less.

These Louisiana government grants for single mothers to apply for could go a long way to help pay college costs.
