Single mothers may have an especially hard time finding a way to pay for college. Fortunately, there are college scholarships and grants for single mothers to apply for to help pay for college. Finding scholarships and grants for single mothers to apply for is the key.
How can one find scholarships and grants for single mothers to apply for? The biggest factor lies in which college is selected. Why does the college selected matter? Because the biggest source of scholarships and grants for single mothers is the federal government. Each college receives a sum of money from the government for distribution to its students who apply for tuition aid. The college is allowed to decide its own policy of how to distribute these funds. Most for-profit colleges spread their student grants thin to attract more students. Women's colleges and community colleges tend to give more tuition assistance to single mothers.
The biggest and most basic education grant program is the Pell Grant. Pell Grants alone will not pay for college costs. Single mothers will need to look for more financial aid elsewhere. Fortunately, there are other governments scholarships or grants for single mothers to attend college. One of these grants for single mothers is the FSEOG. If the single mother successfully applied for the Pell Grant, which is not difficult if her family income is below $35,000, and if she is among the lowest income of the applicants for the FSEOG, she may receive up to another $4,000 for college expenses.
There are two free grants for minority women that single mothers could look into. One is the TEACH Grant which is available to anyone who is willing to sign up to become a teacher after graduation. The second free grant for minority women is the Nursing Scholarship Program. As its name describes, the Nursing Scholarship Program is only for those who sign up as nurses. Like the TEACH Grant, the Nursing Scholarship Program uses the FAFSA report. Unlike the TEACH Grant, the Nursing Scholarship Program is applied through the HRSA website and not FAFSA.
Students who study at their local colleges (even single parent minority women) may also be able to apply for state grants for single mothers. Many state governments give tuition assistance to the needy college students in their state. Individual states have their own policies about how they award grants and scholarships. Some states set up separate non-profit companies to administer the grants. Many states have their own version of the federal Pell Grant. Some states also have their own versions of the TEACH Grant and/or the Nursing Scholarship Program.
There are also private organizations that give out grants for single African American mothers returning to school. The Jeannette Rankin Women's Scholarship Fund is for women 35 and older. The United Negro College Fund is another private organizations that gives out grants for single African American mothers.
Chapters of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) in certain states may also offer special grants or scholarships for single mothers specifically minority women. More specialized grants are awarded by the Sister Thea Bowman Foundation for Catholic higher education and the National Black Nurses Association for student nurses. Grants for single African American mothers to study law in New York may be applied for to the Association of Black Women Attorneys (ABWA).
Although many single mother families are economically disadvantaged, getting a college degree will go some way to help with that problem. A college degree will open the door to better employment with most large companies in the United States. Financial aid in the form of scholorships and grants for single mothers is available to help single mothers pay for college.
