Go Back To School With The Help of a Government Grant

from: Kyle Besser

In today's fast-paced competitive world, not having an education is foolish and career suicide. College graduates make anywhere from 40% to 200% more than those who only have a high school education. Getting a higher education is a given when seeking a more lucrative and successful career.

Unfortunately, one of the biggest hindrances to getting a higher education is the fact that education costs money. Not everyone has enough money for their daily basic needs much less college expenses, but not getting a higher education dooms one to lower earning power. For a single parent whose family mainly depends on a single income, the earning power of the single parent is very important and education is necessary for career advancement.

Fortunately, the government also puts a premium on education and has earmarked a good amount of the federal budget towards helping qualified students, including single mothers grants and assistance, obtain financing for education through grants. Government educational grants for single mothers are a great way to help alleviate some of the financial burden an education involves.

Government Grants

Government grants are made available every year through the Annual Federal Budget. The Annual Federal Budget allocates a good deal of money for various government agencies toward projects and grants. Grant projects become available to the agencies once the budget is made available to them. Various grants will then be offered to those who qualify for certain projects.

These grants will become available on the CFDA, or the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance. This would be a good place to look for a grant that fits your qualifications.

The great thing about grants is that they are non-taxable, and you do not have to pay for them. There are an estimated 1,500 government programs aimed at helping qualified students afford an education.

There are various grants aimed at helping students get through both high school and college. There are even grants that will get you through graduate programs.

Finding a Grant

There are a lot of ways through which you can find single mothers grants and assistance through government grants for your educational needs. The best place to start looking for single mothers grants and assistance would be log on to http://www.cfda.gov to find a comprehensive and complete listing of government grants. Look specifically for online grants for single mothers that pertain to your profile.

Aside from government grants there are tens of thousands of other educational grants single mothers may find offered by each state, by private foundations, and by other non-profit organizations. A good way to find these educational grants single mothers can apply for would be to consult with some local education officials or search on the internet. Find as many educational grants single mothers are eligible for as you can. Many are small amounts of money, so you need to keep looking.

Make sure you qualify for the grant you have chosen. The basic qualifications for government grants is to be a legal citizen of the United States and belong to a household that pays taxes. There may be other qualifications for some of the private grants for single mothers.

You should then apply for a FAFSA, or the Free Application for Student Financial Aid. This application will make you eligible for a Pell Grant. The amount this grant offers depends on your current financial situation, your dependents, and other considerations. Grants are awarded based on need. As a single parent with dependents, you will likely qualify.
