Finding Housing Programs For Single Mothers

from: Karlie Bestler

As a single mother, you may finally find yourself in a position to buy your own home, but, where do you start? Are there housing programs for single mothers? There are many places to find available housing programs, maybe not specifically aimed at single mothers, that do provide safe, affordable housing for single mothers and other low-income segments of the population.

HUD

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has information on housing counseling and lists of local and state agencies that can help a single mother buying a house. Many of the programs that HUD manages are for low-income residents, not specifically housing programs for single moms. However, they have information on getting a loan, avoiding predatory lending practices and first-time home buying programs that would be helpful for a single mother buying a house.

State Housing Finance Agencies

Their mission is to help low-income people get into homes that are safe and affordable. Contact your state housing finance agency to see what local programs may be available in your area for housing programs for single mothers.

Habitat For Humanity

Habitat For Humanity has done more than anyone to place single mothers in safe, affordable housing communities. Habitat For Humanity requires that the selected families be in partnership with Habitat For Humanity to build the home by devoting labor to the task. Although economic need is a basis for choosing families who receive Habitat For Humanity homes, they also look carefully at a family's ability to repay the low-interest loan. Habitat For Humanity could be a life saver for housing for single working mothers.

The Nehemiah Foundation

The Nehemiah Foundation is a privately funded program that gives funds up to 6% of the sales price of a home to first-time and repeat homebuyers who have a qualifying lender. They offer to work with specific lenders in your area, or you can look at Nehemiah home listings that are up for sale.

Looking for housing for single working moms can be very time consuming, but it is time well spent if you find affordable and safe housing for single working mothers. Owning your own home provides tax benefits to the by taking the home mortgage deduction allowed by the IRS. Owning your own home provides a stable base to raise children.
