Living Single TV Sitcom
from: Karlie BestlerLiving Single was an American television sitcom which aired for 5 seasons from 1993 to 1998 on the Fox network. The series was produced by Yvette Lee Bowser in association with Warner Bros. Television. Living Single centered on the lives of 6 friends in their late twenty living in a Brooklyn brownstone. The 4 women and 2 men share personal and professional experiences living the single life in the heart of Brooklyn, New York.
Many in the African American community consider Living Single the "Original Friends." The concept and themes of the two shows are similar. Living Single premiered on Fox in August 1993, months before the creators of Friends began developing the idea for their show and a year before Friends made its September 1994 debut on NBC.
Living Single became one of the most popular African-American sitcoms of its era. It ranked among the top 5 in African-American ratings in all 5 seasons. It was the top rated show among black households during its entire 5 year run.
The series focused on two different households in one brownstone. One household was shared by a trio of independent women. The other was shared by a pair of male friends who have known each other since they spent their youth in Cleveland, Ohio.
Khadijah James (Queen Latifah) was a hard-working editor and publisher of the fictional urban independent monthly Flavor. Her cousin Synclaire James (Kim Coles) was an aspiring actress who works as Khadijah's receptionist and has an affinity for Troll dolls. The third was her childhood friend from East Orange, New Jersey, Regina Hunter (Kim Fields), an image-conscious boutique buyer who was in constant search of a well-to-do man to spend her life with, often referring to said potential man as her "Ken" and later became a costume assistant for a soap opera called Palo Alto with a fondness for gossip and wigs.
Living in the apartment above are Overton Wakefield Jones (John Henton), a friendly handyman who holds deep affection for Synclaire; and Kyle Barker (T.C. Carson), a handsome stockbroker whose constant verbal sparring with Max does little to mask their obvious sexual attraction. The series offered T.C. Carson frequent opportunities to showcase his talents as a jazz-influenced vocalist.
Maxine "Max" Shaw (Erika Alexander), a sharp-tongued attorney and Khadijah's best friend whom she met in college at Howard University stops by frequently to share her unique insights and make sure the girls' refrigerator isn't overstocked and to keep them entertained by sharing her day and starting trouble with Kyle. Kyle and Max maintained an on-again/off-again relationship that was a constant storyline that began at the end of the first season and continued until the end of the series.
The house set for the pilot episode is the same set from the show Family Matters, although the kitchen set was changed. It was resized to about a third of the original and the laundry room was removed.
Fans of the show enjoyed watching everyone on the show deal with love, life, and everything else in between. They watched as Overton and Synclaire flirted with each other, fell in love, and eventually got married. They watched as Khadijah worked hard to keep her magazine going while trying to have a personal life. They loved watching Maxine and Kyle fight, but enjoyed it when they too eventually got together. Who could forget Khadijah and Scooter's relationship?
Regine s mom on Living Single was fashion impaired and had a crazy relationship with Regine. Russell, the Jamaican music editor, was also great on the show, giving Khadijah a hard time and wanting Regine to shimmy for him.
