Food And Energy Assistance For Single Moms

from: Karlie Bestler

Not all single moms are single mothers by choice. Some women who have not met the right person do become single mothers by choice, but for most single moms, it was not by choice. When you get married, you aren't thinking about the marriage ending and being left alone to raise your children. It can happen and you find yourself a single mom.

It is difficult to support a single parent family. Just keeping food on the table and a roof overhead seems impossible. There are some programs that help single moms provide the basic necessities for her children.

WIC

Women, Infants and Children (WIC) is a federally funded program that provides healthy supplemental foods to pregnant women, postpartum and breastfeeding women, infants and children under 5. WIC checks provide nutritious foods from WIC authorized stores. A family's supplemental food package is determined at the local WIC office. Some of the food items provided are milk, peanut butter, cheese, eggs, cereal, juice, and infant formula. The qualifications are based on household size and income. The income requirements are higher than most programs so more women qualify.

Food Stamp Program

This program provides a monthly amount to be used to buy food for your family. Most foods can be purchased using food stamps. Seeds for growing your own food can also be bought with food stamps. This program is based on income, family size, and household expenses, including rent and child care. Many states now offer applications to be filled out on-line. Information can be found online by searching for food stamps or by looking in the phone book under the Department of Social Services.

Energy Assistance

Energy assistance provides financial help for single moms for paying the gas/electric bills usually during the winter months. As other financial programs for single moms, this is based on income and family size. For this financial assistance single moms should apply early as there are limited funds that run out. For more information, call your local utilities company to find out more about the program in your area.

Many areas have programs that are specific to single parents. They are not always easy to find. Many are privately funded and rely on word of mouth. Advertising money is not always available. A great place to start is by talking to other single moms. You can even chat with single moms online. They may have been in your shoes and can tell you where to seek help.

Internet searches may also provide some helpful information. Ask your child's doctor or your local church about programs they may be aware of.
