There are social welfare programs for single moms available in the U.S. Social welfare programs for single moms available in the U.S. are in the form of government subsidies and support programs. Social welfare programs for single moms are designed to help single moms gain independence and self-sufficiency.

Social welfare programs for single moms are targeted to single moms whose income falls below certain poverty levels. The poverty levels vary from year to year with changes in the regulations. Single moms must qualify individually for various social welfare programs for single moms that range from food stamps to single moms housing assistance and health care.

Single Moms Housing Assistance

Public housing is one form of single moms housing assistance. In September 2010, there were more than 1.2 million families living in public housing units of some form according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Income eligibility requirements must be met to qualify for single moms housing assistance in the form of public housing.

Single moms housing assistance in the form of public housing could include apartments, houses and shared living quarters. Documentation for single moms housing assistance in the form of public housing includes tax returns, income verification and expense records. To apply for public housing for lowincome single moms, you can apply at your local HUD office.

Food Assistance to Single Moms

Single moms with income less than $2,000 are eligible for food stamps through the Social Security Administration. The food stamp program is also called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Food stamps are coupons that can be used at participating grocery stores to buy food. The amount of food assistance to single moms is determined by formula that takes into account expenses, income and number of children.

Temporary Government Assistance for Single Moms

The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program, which is also referred to as TANF, is a federal government program operated through the states. The states receive federal money for the purpose of supporting needy families. Families with two parents may be eligible for TANF benefits. Single moms also may also apply. This monthly government help for single moms can be used for living expenses.

Individual states set the amount of money they provide as government help for single moms and their families. TANF regulations require recipients to look for work, although moms with children younger than 12 months old are exempt. Single moms who receive TANF are also eligible for food stamps which is another source of government assistance for single moms to use to help support their families.

Health Care Government Assistance for Single Moms

Medicaid is a program designed for low income families to receive doctor care, hospital care, prescription drug coverage, checkups and emergency services. States administer their programs with varying eligibility requirements. Applicants must meet certain eligibility requirements based on income, expenses, available resources and whether the mom is pregnant or not.

According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, health care coverage may be provided retroactively for three months to eligible recipients. This source of government assistance for single moms must be applied for through the state in which the single mom lives.
