Grants And Scholarships For Single Mothers
from: Karlie BestlerIf you are a single mother looking for money to pay for college, the course of study you choose matters. Some fields of study have a lot of free grants and scholarships for single moms and women available from charitable foundations. One example is the fields of math and science where local chapters of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) often provide grants and scholarships for single moms and women.
A further advantage of these two fields of study is that they are also covered under the TEACH Grant. A single mother who signs on to become a teacher can get up to $4,000 in federal aid for her college education if she studies these subjects and is willing to teach them in a school for poor students.
The TEACH Grant is one of the free scholarship grants single mothers and minority women may take advantage of. The TEACH Grant is available to anyone who is willing to sign up to become a teacher after graduation. The applicant must maintain a GPA of 3.25 and must study certain specified subjects to qualify for it.
Another of the free scholarship grants single mothers and minority women may take advantage of is the Nursing Scholarship Program. The Nursing Scholarship Program is only for those who sign up as nurses. Like the TEACH Grant, the Nursing Scholarship Program uses the FAFSA report. Unlike the TEACH Grant, the Nursing Scholarship Program is applied through the HRSA website and not FAFSA.
The Jeannette Rankin Women's Scholarship Fund is another organization offering scholarship grants single mothers are eligible for. The Jeannette Rankin Women's Scholarship Fund raises money and awards scholarships annually to low income women 35 years of age and older who are enrolled in an undergraduate or vocational training program. It is the policy of the Jeannette Rankin Women's Scholarship Fund to make financial awards without regard to race, creed, religion, color, ancestry, marital status, sexual orientation, national origin, or physical disability.
