There are segments of the American population that still remain disadvantaged even though there has been great progress. Among the most underprivileged are the single black mothers. Many single black mothers are undereducated. Because single black mothers lack education, many single black mothers are not able to secure good jobs. College is expensive and seems almost impossible for single black mothers.

Fortunately, it is possible to find grants and scholarships for African American single mothers to return to school for a better education. These are just a few of the scholarships for African American single moms available to give you an idea of what is available.


United Negro College Fund

A scholarship for African American single mothers might be obtained from the United Negro College Fund. The United Negro College Fund strives to close the educational attainment gap between African Americans and the majority population. The United Negro College Fund helps promising students attend college by administering 400 scholarship and internship programs for students from low and moderate income families for college tuition, books and room and board.


Sister Thea Bowman Black Catholic Educational Foundation

A scholarship for African American single moms might be obtained from the Sister Thea Bowman Black Catholic Educational Foundation. The Sister Thea Bowman Black Catholic Educational Foundation provides scholarship opportunities to young African Americans who might not otherwise have access to quality Catholic higher education. Scholarship awards range from $2,000 to $7,500 annually. Scholarship awards are dependent on need. Scholarships are available to high school students who are transitioning to college. Scholarship awards will be applied toward tuition, on-campus room and board, and books.


The National Black Nurses Association Scholarship Program

The National Black Nurses Association is committed to excellence in education and conducts continuing education programs for nurses and allied health professionals throughout the year. The National Black Nurses Association provides annual scholarships for students for continuing education. This funding enables nurses to grow and better contribute their talents to the health and healthcare of our communities.

Black single moms studying law in New York may apply to the Association of Black Women Attorneys (ABWA) for a scholarship for African American single mothers. Black single mothers in other states will have to look for its equivalent. The Association of Black Women Attorneys is a not-for-profit bar association founded in June, 1976. ABWA's mission is to promote and support the professional development and growth of African American women attorneys.
