Discrimination and Teenage Mothers

from: Karlie Bestler

Society does practice discrimination against single mothers in various ways and to various extents and more so against teenage single moms. Many people label all teenage mothers as irresponsible, and that is very unfair. Not all teenage mothers choose to become mothers intentionally. Some did but it is very harsh to judge all of them badly because they are teen moms.

Teen pregnancy has rapidly risen over the past decade. While ignorance could be blamed for most of the accidental teen pregnancies of the past, we no longer have that problem. School health classes make it impossible for girls to plead ignorance.

In fact, society almost encourages bad behavior. Too often children are left on their own for too much of the day. Girls are allowed to dress without a concern modesty. They are free to stay out to all hours of the night. It is almost amazing that the statistics aren't higher. However, there have been some major strides to help curb this trend.

The "Prom Promise" came on the scene asking boys and girls to remain abstinent on prom night. Since then other abstinence campaigns have evolved, and virginity is again becoming an "it" thing. While parents should take more responsibility when it comes to where and with who a child spends his or her time, it is the teens themselves who have the most at stake and seemingly must take more responsibility.

Granted most teenagers today are sexually active, which can result in the birth of a child, but not all of them who get pregnant wanted that. Members of society see a teenage mom and look down upon her, but they do not do the same to a teenage father. It is not just the teen mom's problem. As we all know, babies cannot be conceived without the contribution of sperm. However, society usually does cast blame to the same extent to the teen fathers. Teen fathers who are not ready for the responsibility of having a child are given a pass by society while the teen mom receives the blame.

Society tends to blame teen moms for all kinds of problems, and that is also unfair. We all are to blame for the rampant problem of teen moms, as well as teen fathers, because we as a society are not perfect. Only a perfect society would produce perfect teenagers who did not have babies at a young age.
