Single black mothers remain one of the most disadvantaged groups of people in this country. Much of the reason is that many are undereducated and thus not able to secure jobs with a high enough pay to lift them out of poverty. The best way for single black mothers to get out of poverty is to go to college and get an education that will enable them to get better paying jobs to support their families.

College is expensive, and many single black mothers think it not possible for them to afford the costs of college. Fortunately for single black mothers, there are many needs based educational grants and scholarships for African American single mothers to use to help pay for college.

Grants and scholarships for African American single mothers might be obtained from many sources. Here are a few of the most well known places for scholarships for African American single mothers.


United Negro College Fund

Scholarships for African American single mothers are available from the United Negro College Fund. The United Negro College Fund strives to close the educational gap between African Americans and the majority population. The United Negro College Fund helps promising students attend college by granting 400 scholarship and internship programs for students from low and moderate income families for college tuition, books and room and board.

The 39 member colleges are all small liberal arts institutions, which makes it possible for them to offer their students quality academic programs while keeping their tuitions to less than half the average of other private colleges. The United Negro College Fund is a great place for possible scholarships for African American single moms.


Sister Thea Bowman Black Catholic Educational Foundation

Scholarships for African American single moms might be obtained from the Sister Thea Bowman Black Catholic Educational Foundation. The Sister Thea Bowman Black Catholic Educational Foundation provides scholarship opportunities to young African Americans who might not otherwise have access to quality Catholic higher education.

Scholarship awards range from $2,000 to $7,500 annually and are dependent on need. Scholarships are only available to African American students. Applicants must have explicit need for financial assistance and must have applied to one of the Catholic colleges or universities partnered with the Sister Thea Bowman Black Catholic Educational Foundation.

Scholarship awards will be applied toward tuition, on-campus room and board, and books. The Sister Thea Bowman Black Catholic Educational Foundation is a great place for possible scholarships for African American single mothers.
